About Department

This Department was established to cater to the ever-increasing demand of the local students for the centre of study where they can decipher the puzzle of the wonders of the Nature in the form topography and the geography of the world and the regional enchanting landscape. Since then the department is engaged in teaching the students of B.A three year degree course affiliated to Himachal Pradesh university Shimla . The Laboratories and the classrooms are equipped with modern geographical instruments and teaching aides Various teaching learning methods have been used by the faculty to make teaching effective and interesting with the use of GIS & Remote Sensing software, Smart Board, Maps, Globes, Geographic Charts and various Geographic Models etc. The faculty has always updating their knowledge with the help of Online E-resources and OERs and the same is disseminated to the students to make them competitive and competent for the highly diverse field of studies. Frequent counseling sessions are organized to address the grievances of the students and the parents with a very successful outcome of the same which reflects in the progress of the students of the Department. The special orientation sessions and guest lectures are organized in the department for the TY students for the guidance and counseling for the higher studies, job opportunities and the career selection.


The Bridge Course for the FY students or newly Enrolled students has been the hallmark of this Department. The remedial courses and the extra classes are conducted for the slow learners to give them necessary impetus to upkeep their studies. Inter departmental quiz, debate, declamation, seminars and workshops are organized to give the students an apt platform to express their hidden talent and potential. He students of the department are given training and exposure to life skills.

Every year the department organizes one academic field tour for students to study various physical as well as socio-economic features. The field knowledge is very important in the real world and it is well said by renowned Professor James Fairgrieve that “Geography comes through the soles of one’s shoes”. The Department aims to retain excellence in the field of academics in future. The students are the foundation stone and the pillars of any distinguished organization which lends a distinguished dimension to the Department, so our Department is planning to establish an Incubation Centre to facilitate the students to give wings to their innovative ideas a conducive platform to work upon and add a new chapter of glory to already rich book of excellence.

Objective

  1. Acquire a framework of knowledge about locations and places that will help them to set local, national and international events within a geographical context and that will support their development of geographical understanding.
  2. Understand some of the important characteristics of the Earth’s major physical systems – its landforms, weather and climate, hydrological and ecological systems – and the interaction among those systems.
  3. Understand the significance of location and of distribution patterns in human activities and physical processes; how places are linked by movements of people, materials and information, and by physical, economic, social and political relationships; and the interdependence of people, places and environments throughout the world.
  4. Understand some of the relationships between people and environments, including both: (i) the influence of environmental conditions on human activities; (ii) the varied ways in which societies with different technologies, economic systems and cultural values have perceived, used, altered and created particular environments.
  5. Develop a sense of place, a feeling for the “personality” of a place and what it might be like to live there.
  6. Acquire knowledge and understanding about the physical and human processes that bring about changes in place, space and environments and a critical appreciation of the consequences of changes.
  7. Develop awareness and appreciation of the ethnic, cultural, economic and political diversity of human society and its geographical expression.
  8. Acquire the knowledge and develop the skills and understanding necessary to identify and investigate important cultural, social and political issues relating to place, space and environment with sensitivity to the range of attitudes and values associated with such issues.
  9. Acquire techniques and develop skills and competencies necessary for geographical enquiry and of value for other purposes, especially the making and interpretation of maps, the use of information technology and the conduct of fieldwork.

SWOC ANALYSIS OF THE DEPARTMENT AND FUTURE PLAN

STRENGTH:
  • Faculty member pays special attention for the students. There is the provision of extra classes and remedial class is for the weak one.
  • Students get strength to give competitive exam and some students get placement offer the final exam.
WEAKNESS:
  • No Honours course.
  • Less faculty members as the college is situated in rural area one low payment from the college authority no one come to do the job here.
OPPORTUNITIES:
  • The Department tries to give them knowledge about the world means quality education and make ready the students for higher education or higher academic career.
